Health Policy

Children in large group settings will be exposed to many childhood illnesses.  Our illness policy is put in place to protect all the children in the Centre they are as follows:

  •  If your child is sick and not attending, please call the Centre by 9:00 am. If your child is attending school, you are also responsible for contacting the school.
  • You must inform the staff if your child has had any medication before coming to the Centre, including Tempera and Tylenol.
  • A full health screen of your child will be conducted if your child exhibits signs of illness such as fatigue, chills, sweating, loss of appetite, clammy skin, clingy or lethargic and if it has been determined that your child is not well enough to participate in the full days scheduled program, he/she is not well enough to attend.
  • Our policies are subject to change because of unusual or new circumstances. We will keep you advised of any changes to our policies. For example, in the spring of 2003, the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak affected our policies.
  • If your child becomes ill during the day (includes but not limited to a high fever, diarrhea or vomiting) you will be called too pick-up your child and he/she will be excluded from the Centre for a full 24 hours after the end of the following business day.  For example, if your child becomes ill at 10:00 am on Tuesday, he/she is not permitted back into the Centre until Thursday morning.  The Wednesday is the recovery day.
  • If the illness persists on Wednesday, your child is not permitted back until Friday. Thursday is now the new recovery day.
  • If your child has been off for three or more consecutive days because of illness, you must bring a doctor’s note indicating your child is not contagious and is well enough to return to the Child Care.
  • Please note, diarrhea or vomiting is 48 hours exclusion. Both of these policies have been put in place as per Toronto Public Health Guidelines.
  • Ill children will be placed in an isolated empty room and supervised until parents arrive.
  • At times the staff will contact parents and ask you to pick up your child and seek medical attention if we notice a rash, bumps, hives or goop in the eye.  Your child can return immediately to the Centre if accompanied with a doctor’s note stating that the child is not contagious and able to return to Child Care.
  • The Health and Wellness Policies and Procedures are reviewed annually by staff.
